What Is Gait Analysis?
Gait analysis is an assessment of how you stand and move. We combine a clinical examination with measurements of pressure beneath your feet to understand loading patterns in the context of your symptoms and daily activities.
Do I Need It?
An assessment may help if foot or lower-limb symptoms are affecting sport, work or a hobby. You do not need to be an athlete.

Different foot shapes and movement patterns are not automatically problems. The purpose is to understand your symptoms, not to make everyone walk in the same way.
How Does Materialise Footscan Work?
You stand on and walk across a pressure plate containing sensors. These record pressure beneath different areas of each foot and how it changes during a step. Materialise Footscan software displays colour maps and graphs for us to review together.
We look at pressure distribution, contact timing and how loading moves from heel towards the forefoot. The plate measures contact pressure; it does not scan inside your foot or diagnose an injury by itself.

What Are We Looking For?
We use the measurements to review how pressure is shared across your feet and how it changes during a step. Tom explains the results alongside your symptoms, footwear and clinical assessment.
Understanding Your Footscan Results
This example recording shows the pressure maps and graphs produced by the Footscan software. The moving display lets us review how contact changes through a step.
- Pressure Maps: Colours show different pressure levels beneath the feet. On the pressure scale shown, warmer colours represent higher pressure; they do not automatically mean an injury.
- Timing And Loading: Graphs help us compare how different areas of the foot are loaded over time.
- Your Assessment: Tom explains what the measurements mean alongside your symptoms and examination. The scan alone does not diagnose a condition.
What To Expect
- Your Story: We discuss symptoms, footwear, training, work demands and hobbies.
- Clinical Assessment: We examine relevant movement, strength and foot posture.
- Standing And Walking: We record your measurements on the Footscan plate, repeating walks as needed.
- Your Results: We explain the findings on screen and agree practical next steps.
What Happens Afterwards?
Advice may include exercises, changes to activity, footwear guidance or bespoke insoles where appropriate. An assessment does not mean you must buy insoles.
Bring your usual shoes, trainers or work footwear and clothing that lets us assess your legs comfortably.
